Jeremy and Tammy Vigil brought a baby lamb to share with the students. It was an incredible learning experience as many of the students had never seen a lamb before! Tammy explained why little Blackie eats out of the bottle and what he will eat when he gets bigger. Jacob got to have a turn showing his classmates how he feeds him. Everyone got a turn to touch him and we discussed what he felt like and watched him move all around the field outside. Thank you Vigil's for allowing us such a great experience!

The children were delighted as they watched baby Blackie move around the circle.

National Volunteer Week
The students made cards and pictures for all of the wonderful volunteers that come into our classroom every week to help us excel in our learning. I was able to capture some of the children reading their cards to Mr. Bob a community volunteer that we are so BLESSED to have several times a week.

Mr. Bob and Ms. Melinda both volunteers at Barr Lake came to share an incredible eagle presentation with us. We were able to use ropes to understand the exact size of an eagle nest. Mr. Bob read us a story about eaglets. The students were able to explore an eagle's skull, a talon, eggs, and lots of other great things. This was the second time we have been blessed with a presentation from Mr. Bob and Ms. Melinda. Barr Lake has some great programs and the students are very excited about our upcoming field trip to Barr Lake on May 23rd.

Spring Concert
Mrs. Boyer volunteered her time every Wednesday after school for students who were interested in joining an elementary choir. I had the opportunity to attend the concert and hear all their beautiful voices. We had 13 students from our class singing.  Thank you Mrs. Boyer!

Igneous Rocks and Volcanoes:
We have been studying Igneous rocks and the students got to make their own volcanoes erupt. You can tell by the expressions on their faces they were very excited!

Conner brought his rock book from home and was excited to share it with the class.

Dr. Seuss and Book Challenge Party

Astronaut Food
We have been studying the astronauts and today we got to pretend to be astronauts and eat through a straw. We also tried some freeze dried fruit. Many students commented on how difficult it is to be an astronaut, "they have to go to school forever and eat gross fruit"
If you have some time ask your child why they had to use a straw to eat their food. They would love to share the special techniques that are required for showering and using the bathroom. The students were very intrigued by these routines that we take for granted here on Earth.

Below the students are using yardsticks and unifix cubes to measure 100 inches. They all did a wonderful job making 100 inch snakes, worms, and letters. Avery did an outstanding job using the board and adding up numbers to figure out how many yardsticks her group needed!

More pictures of our 100th Day of School. The students did an excellent job with their collections of 100 items.

We had a great day in reading last Friday the kids had been learning the /oo/ sound so we decided to make GOO!

Abby was excited to show off the brain she had made.

After combining the Borax and water mixture to the glue the students enjoyed squeezing the bag until their "goo" formed.

Anastazia created a bouncing ball with her goo and enjoyed trying it out.

100th Day math fun. Anja and Jacob are flipping coins 100 times while recording tallies to see if heads or tails will win. Below the boys are counting 100 licks on their lollipop.

Outer Space is Awesome! All the students were engaged on Thursday afternoon as we worked on arranging our new bulletin board. They arranged the paper, words, planets and astronauts. I think they did a wonderful job!

Measuring in Math Class We have been exploring different types of measurement in 1st grade and the students have really enjoyed using 6 and 12 inch rulers and tape measures!
